The original book was about 10 lines long (less than 350 words), not a lot of depth. The movie goes into a deeper meaning and gives life to the monsters (whom you don't see until about 1/2 an hour into the movie).
In order as pictured:
KW-representing Max's sister, going off to be with her new friends
Daniel-Doesn't speak until the end..he is the voice of reason and maturity
Alexander- represents Max's feelings of never being heard or listened to at home
Ira- feels neglected (just like Max)
Carol- is a representation of Max himself. Throwing tantrums and destroying things.
Douglas- Not sure about Douglas the bird. He is a large part of the movie and adorable.
Judith- Ira's partner, and often feeling like a downer and neglected. (also like Max's feelings about his place in the family)
All in all a good movie. Not great, but pretty good. The scenery is gorgeous, and they really did a good job of taking a 10 line story and turning it into a full length movie.
I would recommend this movie with 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.

Happy SITS Saturday Sharefest! Haven't seen the movie yet, but my 2yr old grandson is nuts for the book.
Stop by if you get a chance.

Good to know-- I wondered how they made the book into a full length movie. It was my husband's favorite book when he was a kid:)
Yeah, I want to see this one. I will probably wait until it comes on to video.
Thanks for stopping by my blog.
I saw the movie too.
Stopping by via SITS to say hello.
Have a great weekend!
Harriet
Thanks for the review, I've been wondering how it is!
it's interesting how polarizing this movie is, some people say WTWTA is the best movie of the year while others say it's the worst; i tend to lean toward the latter opinion just because it didn't really have a plot
